Tips for Less Pain when Gardening!

It’s the time of year to play in the dirt!!Here are a few tips to keep you moving safely and effectively while you do so.

At Anointed Hands Wellness, we believe staying active should not come with unnecessary pain. With a few simple adjustments, you can enjoy gardening while protecting your back, knees, and joints.

·Bend with your knees to pick up items off the ground. Use a step stool for assistance if needed.

·Use a small step stool or chair to sit on while gardening so that you don’t have to get on down on your knees. Amazon and Wayfair also offer seating devices that can be used to sit on.

·If getting down on your knees then, use a stool or chair to assist you going down and then use a kneeling(cushioned) pad for comfort.

·Garden when someone (a neighbor or loved one) is around to assist you in getting up from the ground. If no one is available then, call a friend to let them know to check on you in about 30-60 min.

·Use a planter box or a raised bed to limit the amount of bending that is necessary.

·After being in 1 position for too long (more than 5-7 min) get up and walk around. This will keep your muscles from tightening up and spasming.

·Stretch after gardening like you would after working out.Scan the QR code below for stretching ideas or email us your questions @ [email protected]

·Try to do your gardening in short sessions. Garden for a maximum of 15-20 mins at even giving time. Take a break and find a seat with a back and head rest and get something to drink.

·Stay hydrated and keep on a hat to keep the sun off you and keep your body temperature regulated.

·Use tools that have an extended end on it so that you can reach with less bending.

·Get the kids, grandkids, neighbors over to help you in planting your gardening. Its s great way to spend quality time together getting to know each other.
